C’est l’histoire de trois personnages, inventeurs de machines permettant de retranscrire visuellement des mondes fantaisistes et absurdes. Boîte phosphorescente, Tron-box (en hommage au film du même nom), générateur de particules lumineuses et carton perforé, xylophone visuel, gymnopédie cellulosique… mais les machines sont capricieuses et révéleront quelques surprises à nos apprentis ingénieurs.

De l’ombre à la lumière se dessinent les contours de la boîte noire, machine magique et imprévisible. Les mystères qu’elle renferme prennent vie dans ce spectacle tout public à la croisée du concert, du théâtre d’objet et du cinéma. Les trois artisans de ce film abstrait et poétique, Yro et le duo SATI, fabriquent et manipulent une série d’objets étonnants qui leur servent de matière première. À la fois lisses et granuleuses, les images qui composent la performance aux allures artisanales sont créées en direct par des dispositifs filmés par des caméras et retransmis à l’écran (maquette, papier, carton, lumière, moteurs, fils…). L’esthétique low-tech des images fait référence aux films en noir et blanc, bien que la performance s’appuie sur les dernières technologies multimédias. Les particules, les lignes graphiques et autres mouvements s’enrichissent au hasard de la manipulation et forment des images étonnantes, comme générées par un ordinateur imparfait.

Une musique ambiante et vallonnée entraîne les films dans des climats sombres et sensibles, mélange des sons concrets captés par les dispositifs d’Yro et des compositions électroniques et acoustiques du duo SATI. Le public navigue entre des paysages calmes et tortueux, des ambiances expérimentales et mélodiques. Sans comprendre la signification exacte des images et des sons, le spectateur sent leur force et leur pouvoir de suggestion, entraîné dans le processus de fabrication et la mécanique du rêve.

Operators is the culmination of a series of recent studio studies. These have been clustered together to form a stage of experimentation with the Operator at the center going about his work. Manipulating the surrounding elements, he creates acoustic and visual signatures which are spliced together to form a narrative. As images blend between artifice and the ‘reality break’, the resulting ‘film’ is juxtaposed against its very own ‘making of’.

In this live performance Transforma and sound artist Markus Hübner create a sound and video stream which treats video, original sound recordings and music in no hierarchical order.

With this project, Thomas Toussaint presents a new soundtrack of Walter Ruttman’s legendary film Berlin: Symphony Of A Great City (1927). This live performed cinemix is a real-time synchronisation of video clips from the original film with electronic/ jazz music.
Exploring the links between early experimentations in cinema and modern Audio/Video/live techniques, the project is also a reflection on Berlin and its history, a bridge between modern alternative cultures and the 1920’s intensive activity in the city. Berlin: Synchronisation Of A City will be presented in November
2009, at the Swedish Ambassy in Germany for the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall.

Ce cinemix-live consiste à synchroniser en direct des extraits du film original avec un nouvel ensemble de compositions musicales.

Outcome of two visual artists from the label AIEPROD, BomBaKlaK and Azop Corp. During 2005, Update was created with the common desire to make a live set as immersive as possible. During the last two years, they spent their time filming, editing, composing, performing in Europe, always in search of cultural exchange and inspiration. UpDate is now coming back from Japan, and is proud to present their latest creation.

Rick Le Cube est né d’une poule ! Imaginez le choc. Mis à la porte du poulailler, manu militari, voici notre Rick parti à l’aventure dans un univers fascinant. Il va découvrir le monde, ou plutôt un monde, celui inventé et mis en musique par Sati.

Mariant différentes techniques d’animation (le « stop motion », la création 3D), le duo nous entraîne dans leur contrée imaginaire et colorée. Des vols d’oiseaux, des forêts, des cours d’eau à traverser, … personne ne sait ce qui attend vraiment Rick dans ce voyage initiatique. Nous le suivons pas à pas, porté par la musique tour à tour inquiétante, joyeuse ou enivrante.

Un film d’animation sans parole mais pas sans âme, un road movie fabuleux qui enchantera les plus petits et les plus grands.

Performing as «mediums» pulling from recorded media, the power of the dead. Clips are collected to form video «dictionaries » of primary symbols or universal archetypes. The performers will improvise a duet made entirely of the video clips. The sounds will come from the source videos. The performance will create a temporary temple for the audience. A focal point filled with celebrities, static and gods. Video content will be selected in a stream of consciousness style of editing, music concrete meets video cut ups inspired by Burroughs and Gysin.

Jouant comme des “mediums” puisant le pouvoir de la mort dans divers matériaux enregistrés. La performance est nourrie de «dictionnaires» vidéos composés de symboles primitifs et d’archétypes universaux. Les participants improvisent un duo entièrement composé de vidéo clips. Le son provient des sources vidéo.
La performance construit un temple éphémère à destination du public. Avec une prédominance de célébrités, parasites et dieux. Le contenu des vidéos est choisi dans un style de montage proche du flux de conscience, la musique concrète côtoie des cut-up vidéo inspirés de Burroughs et Gysin.

Tasman Richardson is a Torontobased Canadian video and new media artist.
Tasman has been a practicing artist for over a decade and has exhibited or performed extensively throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia. His single channel and installation work focuses on the range of contemporary abstract experience including: our post-everything temporal/cultural black hole via tele-visionary existence, video editing as an intuitive primal and musical language, the strict unification of sound and image, micro-subliminal composition, and capturing illusive digital refuse, glitches and “ghosts in the machine”.

Tasman Richardson est un artiste vidéo et nouveau média Canadien de Toronto. Tasman travaille depuis plus de dix ans et a beaucoup exposé ou joué sur les continents américain, européen ou asiatique.
Son travail comprenant installations et vidéos se rapproche des expériences abstraites contemporaines : notre trou noir temporel/culturel post-tout généré par l’existence télévisuelle, le montage vidéo comme langage intuitif musical et primitif, l’alliance rigoureuse du son et de l’image, des compositions micro-subliminales, et des captures de déchets digitaux trompeurs, accidents et « fantômes dans la machine ».

RYBN is a multi-field artistic collective,
specialized in the realisation of installations, performances and interfaces, refering to the codified systems of artistic representation (painting, architecture, counter-cultures)as well as to human and physical phenomena (geopolitics, socio-economy, sensory perception, cognitive systems). Their research focuses on the construction of a « semantics of the convergence », via the coupling, the diversion and the perversion of writing and formalization tools connected to the technologies of communication, information and sensory – webs, data flows, smell, surveillance, audiovisual, interaction, real time.

Origami flowers and bubble wrap are shredded into textured beats and sampled alongside double bass, strings and ukulele, while infra-red cameras examine aged books flicked in time to the music and typewritten poetry is hammered out live in quad time.
Origamibiro and The Joy of Box is a live audio-visual convergence between video artist The Joy of Box (Jim Boxall) and musicians and producers Origamibiro (Tom Hill and Andy Tytherleigh), involving multiple instruments, hi and lo-fi technologies and unorthodox objects to produce an intimate, vivid and atmospheric performance.

Des origami et des emballages à bulles sont déchiquetés pour produire des beats denses et samplés aux côtés d’une contrebasse, d’instruments à cordes et d’un ukulele, tandis qu’une caméra infra-rouge examine de vieux livres feuilletés au rythme de la musique et que de la poésie tapée sur une machine à écrire est martelée à quatre temps.

Hybrid and collective, the project pursues the classic genre of the table performance within the framework of an audio / video performance. Taking into account the crucial element of the scenic presence, the practice of the three-dimensional works -the sculpture- is integrated as a productive component in
the audio / video project.
Mutable proposes a volume / universe made of various supports, playgrounds and architectural ramifications. Micro cameras
and contact microphones are used in this scenic object to compose a live  » cinema of objects », thanks to the manipulation of the spatial mechanisms on this prepared table. It is a performance made of images and concrete sounds, which are mixed and worked during a live event with the aim of proposing «insane introspection in the ordinary worlds».

Hybride et collectif, le projet aborde le support classique de la table dans le cadre de la performance Audio/vidéo. Prendre en compte un élément premier de la présence scénique, et par une pratique du volume, de la sculpture, l’intégrer comme composant productif du projet Audio/vidéo.
La Mutable propose donc un volume/univers fait de différents plateaux, d’airs de jeux et de ramifications architecturales.
Micro caméras et microphones contacts sont implantés dans cet objet scénique pour composer en live un « cinéma d’objets», par la manipulation des mécanismes spatiaux de la table préparée. En final c’est une performance faite d’images et de sons concrets mélangés et travaillés en direct visant une « introspection insensée des mondes ordinaires.

art and concert, NOBODY is a show audio video. Locked in an empty universe, someone redefines its space and its boundaries to its perception and imagination. Confronting a minimal aesthetic to an aggressive and experimental treatment of the image and the sound, no-body is seen, heard and felt.

Au croisement de la performance, de l’art vidéo et du concert, NOBODY est un spectacle audio vidéo. Enfermé dans un univers vide, une personne redéfinit son espace et ses limites selon sa perception et son imagination. No-body se voit, s’écoute et se ressent.

Chdh is a live hybrid performance, offering a symbiosis between the sound and the image. Between minimalism and industrial, chdh creates a single, cold but organic universe. Thanks to the use of mathematical algorithms and physical models, chdh brings a new vision of the use of dataprocessing tools in musical creation.
The use of audio-visual objects, having a sound component and a video component controlled by the same parameters allow an effective management of the relations between the two medias. This project evokes a virtual world, made up with more or less autonomous abstract creatures.

During the workshop we will explore the expressive possibilities of live media using Quartz Composer,

Starting with the basics of software members will be taken in constructing a composition audioreattiva and MIDI control.
Quartz Composer is fast becoming a new standard in TV production, theater and events in general.

MIRfestival presents innovative, experimental, exciting artistic projects at the crossroads of performing arts, visual arts and live media. It is an international contemporary art festival focusing on the experiment and it welcomes adventurous creation around performance, live media, image by artists who want to share with the audience a personal view of the world. Named after the old orbital station, it aims to be an open space for creative artists and audiences to meet, exchange, communicate and reflect.

MIRfestival is organized by MIR, a non-profit cultural company, in collaboration with private and public organizations and institutions. The festival was founded by its actual artistic director Christiana Galanopoulou. It is biennial and it takes place in industrial spaces, theatres and other venues in Athens. For information on the 2008 edition, please visit our web archive.

MIRfestival 2010 will be on in Athens, from September 10-18.

Your submissions are welcome!

You may submit:

> performance, small scale dance and theatre productions,

> live media projects, projects combining experimental music and image or performance and image,

> installations, interactive installations, interactive projects,

> urban projects and interventions in the city

> experimental film and video

MIRfestival is not thematic. However, for its 2010 edition, apart from the other artistic projects which will be included in its programme and will be held in a theatre, a gallery etc, it is also searching for projects and actions intervening to Athens squares and public spaces, under the theme HERE/ NOW.
